wicked

8.5/10

As much as I love musical theatre, I’ve never really cared for Wicked. So, I watched this for my bitch Ariana Grande and she did not disappoint. The only disappointing thing involving her was her interactions with her little freak Boq, because I’d just remember that they FUCK in real life….He was so submissive and wimpy it was disgusting. Her and Cynthia’s vocals melted together like butter and they both executed their roles perfectly. I love that both of them brought such a softness/vulnerability to their characters while still being so powerful and confident in themselves. I was scared about the color grading not being eye-catching enough because some stills looked so dull, but it was beautiful and the contrast between Glinda and Elphaba was STUNNING. The choreography, costumes, set design, makeup, etc everything was so otherworldly and did a fantastic job of transporting you into the world of Oz. I was engaged for the majority of the movie, but my interest dipped in some parts. The part where Fiyero and Elphaba left the classroom to let the cub free was a little boring but their chemistry (hot…) and how charming Fiyero is kind of made up for it. Another part that was disengaging and honestly took me completely out of the experience was the cameo from Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel…please don’t kill me Wicked fans. I completely get paying respect to the OG girls and involving them in some way, but I just felt like it went on for so long and it was so in-your-face-like look!!! Wicked!!! Get it? they played each other!!! I don’t know, it felt very commercial. Now, don’t get me wrong, I loved Defying Gravity, but it felt like the moment was dragged a little bit. It still was so powerful, nonetheless. Overall it was a beautifully emotional and personal film filled with incredible spectacles and I can’t wait for part 2.
