Anyone but you

Oh, rom-coms are so back baby. No one wants to make a true rom-com anymore; rom-coms aren’t supposed to be mindblowing films, just something fun and sweet. This had all the elements it needed to fit that; pretending to be together then actually falling for each other, devastating miscommunication, enemies-to-lovers trope, hot sex, and unrealistic declarations of love. So, let’s start at the beginning. Bea and Ben’s meet-cute at the coffee shop and post-date at his was sweet. I get she didn’t have much experience with hookups but how stupid can you be to just leave in the morning without saying anything; classic miscommunication. They end up hating each other, but are forced to reunite for a wedding they’re both attending. Fast forwarding to a bit before Claudia and Halle’s wedding, Ben and Bea are pretending to be together. At this point, I’m kinda falling in love with Glen Powell… He and Sydney’s chemistry on and off screen is honestly off the charts, they definitely smashed irl. Speaking of smashed, that sex scene was STEAMYY. But the miscommunication stunting them AGAIN afterward was just annoying. Another annoying thing was Bea’s parents; they were batshit crazy??? They invited Bea’s ex without permission, constantly pressured her about marriage, and made a huge scene in front of every one about her dropping out of school. Also, they painted her ex as too much of a good guy until the very end. I wasn’t given enough reason to hate him and even wanted Bea to get back with him at some point, until she revealed she felt extremely unfulfilled with him like y’all couldn’t have played that up a bit more? Ben’s friend Peter also should’ve been hated more like what a terrible rendition of the comedic best friend trope. I found him so unfunny and cringe. I will say I did find myself LOLing a bit during the movie, no thanks to him though. The ending was romantic, but after going back and forth so many times it felt less cathartic than it should’ve been. The end credits montage was adorable in my humble opinion. Overall, this was a solid attempt at bringing back the classic rom-com and I’m in love with Glen Powell (and his T-rex arms).
